Solar comes up in almost every conversation we have about summer electric bills right now, and manufactured home buyers ask about it more than almost any other upgrade. That makes sense — a rural Texarkana lot with full sun exposure and an all-electric heat pump looks like a textbook solar candidate on paper. But a manufactured home is not a stick-built house with a permanent foundation, and the roof, the electrical panel, and the way lenders and insurers treat the home all change the math. This guide walks through what's realistic, what usually gets skipped over, and what to check before anyone puts a proposal in front of you.
Can you actually put solar panels on a manufactured home?
Yes, mechanically it's done all the time — but the roof matters more than it does on a stick-built home. HUD-Code manufactured homes are engineered to a specific structural load rating that includes roof, snow, and wind loads for your wind zone (we cover wind zones in detail in our wind zones and storm safety guide). Standard rooftop solar racking adds weight and wind-load exposure that wasn't necessarily part of the home's original engineering.
The practical answer installers give most often: a metal or shingle roof in good condition, on a home with a standard truss/rafter roof (not a flat or very low-pitch roof), can usually carry a properly engineered solar array — but it has to be engineered for that specific home's data plate, not assumed from a stick-built install. Your HUD data plate (explained in our data plate guide) lists the structural design zone and wind zone the home was built to meet, and any licensed solar installer working on a manufactured home should ask to see it before quoting a roof-mount system.
Roof-mount vs. ground-mount — which one actually makes sense?
For most manufactured home buyers on acreage in East Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana, ground-mount ends up being the more common and often simpler answer, for a few reasons:
- No roof penetration risk. Every hole drilled through a manufactured home's roof membrane for mounting hardware is a potential leak point, and manufactured home roofs are a different assembly than a stick-built roof deck. A ground-mount system avoids that question entirely.
- Easier to size correctly. A ground array isn't limited to whatever roof plane faces the right direction — you can orient and tilt it for your specific lot.
- Simpler for older or used homes. If you're buying a used manufactured home (see our used-home private-seller guide) with an unknown roof history, ground-mount sidesteps the "how much life is left in this roof" question that comes with any rooftop install.
The trade-off is land: a ground-mount system needs open, unshaded space, which is exactly why it fits the acreage lots common across our service area better than it fits a tighter lot inside a manufactured home community.
Does solar actually lower the bill enough to matter?
It depends entirely on what's driving your bill in the first place, and that's the part buyers skip. Solar doesn't reduce how much electricity a poorly insulated home uses; it just changes where that electricity comes from.
The order that actually saves money, in priority:
- Upgraded insulation and dual-pane low-E windows — the lowest-cost, highest-return move, and it's available at the factory before the home is even built.
- A heat pump instead of resistance-strip electric heat — often the single biggest swing in a monthly bill.
- Sealed ductwork and skirting with a real thermal break — cheap insurance against energy loss at the seams.
- Solar, once the home itself is already efficient.
A well-insulated, heat-pump-equipped manufactured home with a right-sized solar array can genuinely bring the grid bill close to zero in sunny months. The same array on a poorly insulated home with resistance heat mostly just offsets a bigger number — the panels aren't doing anything wrong, the home underneath them is working against them.
What about the electrical panel and the utility company?
Two practical items most buyers don't think about until an installer brings them up:
- Panel capacity. Manufactured homes often ship with a smaller amperage panel than a comparable stick-built house, especially older or entry-level models. Adding solar (and battery backup, if you want one) sometimes requires a panel upgrade first. Ask your dealer what panel size is standard on the floor plan you're considering, and ask a solar installer to confirm it's sufficient before you commit to a quote.
- Interconnection and net metering rules are set by your specific electric utility or rural co-op, not by the state as a whole, and they vary meaningfully across our four-state area. Before signing anything, call your utility directly and ask what their net-metering policy is, whether they require a separate interconnection agreement, and whether there's a cap on residential solar in your area.
Does solar affect financing or insurance on a manufactured home?
This is genuinely lender- and insurer-specific, and it's a "call and confirm" question rather than a general rule — HomeHaven doesn't make credit decisions and can't tell you how a specific lender will treat a solar array on your loan. A few things worth asking directly:
